Fleas in Pets: What Every Cat Owner Should Know

Fleas in Pets: What Every Cat Owner Should KnowWith the heavy rains, and subsequent Santa Ana winds and higher than normal temperatures here in Southern California, flea prevention has become a hot topic at Rock Creek Ragdolls. We prioritize the long-term health and comfort of every cat and kitten we raise. Fleas are one of the most common external parasites affecting pets, and even indoor-only cats are not completely immune. Understanding how fleas spread, the risks they pose, and how to prevent them is an important part of responsible pet ownership.

What Are Fleas and How Do Pets Get Them?

Fleas are tiny, wingless parasites that feed on the blood of animals. They can enter your home on shoes, clothing, other pets, or visiting animals. Once inside, fleas reproduce quickly—one flea can lay dozens of eggs per day, which fall into carpets, bedding, and furniture. This makes early prevention and prompt treatment essential.

Even cats that never go outdoors can be exposed. Dogs, humans, or rodents can unknowingly bring fleas into the home, where they then seek a warm host—often your cat.

Why Fleas Are a Problem for Cats

Fleas are more than just an annoyance. They can cause:

  • Intense itching and skin irritation
  • Hair loss and scabs, especially around the neck and tail base
  • Allergic reactions (flea allergy dermatitis)
  • Anemia, particularly dangerous for kittens
  • Transmission of parasites, such as tapeworms

Because Ragdolls have semi-long coats, flea infestations can sometimes go unnoticed until symptoms appear, making routine checks especially important.

Prevention Is Key

The best defense against fleas is prevention. Start using Revolution (not the Plus), which is an effective flea prevention plan tailored to your cat’s age, weight, and lifestyle. I just treated my entire house. Regular grooming, frequent vacuuming, and washing pet bedding can significantly reduce the risk of infestation.

Avoid using dog flea products on cats—many contain ingredients that are toxic to felines. Always use cat-specific treatments recommended by a veterinarian.

What to Do If You Suspect Fleas

If you notice excessive scratching, small black specks in your cat’s coat (often called “flea dirt”), or visible fleas, act quickly. Have your cat bathed in a cat safe shampoo, and give a Capstar flea treatment for cats, available on Amazon. It will begin killing the fleas within 30 minutes, and will be 90% effective in 2-4 hours. Successful flea control requires treating all pets in the household and cleaning the home thoroughly to break the flea life cycle.
