How Often Should You Groom Your Ragdoll? Home & Professional Grooming Guide

One of the many reasons people fall in love with Ragdolls is their breathtaking, silky coat. While their fur is surprisingly resistant to matting compared to many other long-haired breeds, it still requires consistent care to keep it healthy, soft, and beautiful. Grooming isn’t just about appearance – it plays an important role in your pet’s overall health and well-being. You may be wondering how often should you groom your Ragdoll?

At Rock Creek Ragdolls, we recommend combining regular home grooming with professional grooming to keep your cat looking and feeling their very best.

Your Home Grooming Routine

Home grooming is one of the easiest ways to strengthen the bond with your Ragdoll while helping prevent common coat problems. We recommend brushing your Ragdoll at least two to three times per week, increasing to daily during seasonal shedding periods. A quality stainless steel comb is ideal for gently working through the coat and checking areas where tangles commonly develop, including behind the ears, under the front legs, around the chest, along the belly, and around the hindquarters.

In addition to regular brushing, every Ragdoll owner should establish a simple grooming routine that includes trimming nails every 2–3 weeks, cleaning the ears as needed, gently wiping away any eye discharge, and checking the teeth and gums for signs of tartar or inflammation. Grooming sessions are also the perfect opportunity to inspect your cat’s skin for bumps, parasites, irritation, or anything unusual. Starting these routines while your kitten is young helps create a confident adult cat that enjoys being handled and views grooming as a positive experience.

The Benefits of Professional Grooming

Even with excellent home care, professional grooming offers benefits that many owners simply can’t duplicate. An experienced feline groomer has the equipment and expertise to thoroughly bathe, dry, comb, de-shed, and safely remove developing mats before they become uncomfortable. Professional grooming also includes nail trimming, ear cleaning, sanitary trims, and a detailed inspection of your cat’s skin and coat.

Professional grooming is about much more than keeping your Ragdoll looking beautiful. A skilled groomer can often identify developing mats, dry skin, excessive dandruff, ear problems, parasites, or unusual lumps and bumps that may warrant a veterinary examination. They also use specialized equipment, including high-velocity dryers, to remove loose undercoat and dead hair after bathing, helping reduce shedding and hairballs while leaving the coat soft, fluffy, and beautifully maintained. Attempting to remove mats at home can accidentally injure your cat’s delicate skin, making professional care a safe and worthwhile investment.

At Rock Creek Ragdolls, I recommend scheduling a professional grooming appointment every 6–8 weeks. I personally utilize a trusted mobile feline groomer, which provides a calm, one-on-one experience without the stress of a busy grooming salon. Many families appreciate the convenience of mobile grooming, while others may prefer visiting an established feline grooming salon. The most important factor is choosing a groomer who has experience working with long-haired cats, especially rag dolls, and who understands the unique needs of their luxurious coats.

A Lifetime of Beautiful Coats

A gorgeous Ragdoll coat doesn’t happen by accident—it is the result of consistent care. By combining routine brushing, nail care, ear cleaning, and regular health checks at home with professional grooming every 6–8 weeks, you’ll help your Ragdoll stay comfortable, healthy, and looking as luxurious as the breed is known for. Grooming is more than maintenance; it’s another opportunity to care for your companion, strengthen your bond, and ensure they enjoy a lifetime of health, comfort, and beauty.
